Yes, most people, whether they realize it or not, have some sort of a kitchen theme. It maybe very subtle or simply a color scheme but it is still a theme. I recently wrote an article about my mom's Chef Decor in her kitchen and decided to continue in this line with a few more kitchen themes. This time it's an Apple Kitchen Theme.
My friend, Susan, has a kitchen site: Apple Kitchen Stuff. I got to looking around her site, reading the articles and checking out the products. I was impressed and decided a post about apples in a kitchen theme would be fun to write. Take a few minutes and visit her site. It's full of helpful tips, suggestions and products for those of us that would love to incorporate apples in our kitchen!
Apple Kitchen Themes
Believe it or not, there are a lot of different ways you can go with an apple kitchen theme. It can be all out, subtle or somewhere in between.
Color is probably the first thing to decide. Remember, there are different colored apples but they are all still apples. You have to decide which color direction you are going for. In the table below are 3 examples of popular apple colors:
 | Red delicious apples are a deep red. These are usually the ones we think of first when we think of "apple red". |
 | Granny Smith apples are a yellow-green. Actually darker than you think but any shade or tint in the ball park is called Apple Green. It is a very popular color in decorating just about any room in the house. |
 | Golden Delicious apples, when completely ripe, are actually a gold-yellow with a hint of light green. This is a sunny, fun color. |
Colors that Go Together
If you look at a standard color wheel, you will see that red and green are directly across from each other. These are called complimentary colors -- exact opposites on the color wheel. I know what you're thinking -- "Red and Green? That's too Christmas!" (Color wheel explained here.)
Ah, but you forgot, all shades and tints of red and green are complimentary. Take a look at the picture below. It doesn't look like Christmas.

Notice the kitchen is mostly apple green with bold red accents like the window frame over the sink, the glass door frame and transom, the dining chairs, the coffee maker and bowl of apples on the counter as well as the knobs on the stove. No Christmas here!
Now, we can also use the Golden Delicious apple as our inspiration for colors in the kitchen.
Here, the walls are a light shade of yellow and the cabinets a bit darker shade -- both in the golden delicious neighborhood. They tied this to the island that is a light green and the light fixtures in a bright, bold hue of green. It's more of a vintage look using these tints and shades of yellow and green but the style of the pendant lights bring a bit of present day to the design. The white appliances and neutral floor make this a very welcoming kitchen.
Okay, what about red delicious? How's this:

This kitchen is based in white and "Shakespeare Tan" (on the walls). Those two colors are a perfect background that makes the red accents pop! Even the inside of the white corner cabinet is painted red and just jump out at you. I love these colors together.
This color scheme would be considered "analogous" -- using colors adjacent on the color wheel (reds and the tan is a shade of orange) and white as the neutral.
So, your work is cut out for you. You need to decide what color scheme you are going to use for your apple kitchen theme. It's not just red anymore! Below are a few cool items that could be used to accent one of the kitchens above. What do you think?
