Cake stands are one of my favorite items -- ever. They are so versatile and useful, especially at the holidays. You can make centerpieces out of them, create a beautiful dessert table or buffet for a holiday party or even for your holiday meals.
They can hold an entire pie or cake, sure. But they can also hold individual desserts like brownies, tarts, mini cheesecakes, cookies and so much more. The absolute best thing about them is that they give you vertical height on your table.
Speaking from a design point of view, the eye loves to travel side to side but up and down as well. It's searching for a place to rest for a second. If everything is the same height or flat on the table, it's not pleasing.
However, mix in a few different heights and the eyes are visually excited. Seems funny, but it is true. All you have to do is add some different heights to your dessert table, buffet or dining table.
Keep this concept in mind when you put together little vignettes or groupings of your holiday decor. Don't line up a bunch of items that are the same height. Mix it up! It'll get noticed more -- after all, that's why we bother to decorate in the first place -- to get noticed!
